Inhabitant
Majorca has approx. 820,000 announced inhabitants (year 2009), about the half of them (approx. 390,000) live in the capital Palma. Other large municipalities are Calvià (47.934), Manacor (37.963), Llucmajor (33.222), Marratxi (31.120), Inca (28.306), Felanitx (17.443), Alcúdia (17.435), Pollença (16.570) and Sóller (13.194). The proportion of foreigners in the population amounts at the moment to about 17% from what 7.0% of the whole population are citizens of the European Union. Most inhabitants from foreign European countries come from Morocco, Argentina and Ecuador.
Majorca languages
The official languages are a Catalan and Spanish. The Catalan dialect, spoken on the island, is called Mallorquin. Since the eighties Catalan is an equal official and meanwhile the even first language before the castellano spanish. However, in the tourist centres of the island German and English is also spoken everywhere.

Majorca belongs to the autonomy area of the Balearic islands and is governed by his capital Palma. Politically the island was split in 53 municipalities.
